The purpose of the incense burner, also known as a censer or
thurible, is to serve as a container for burning various forms of incense.
The use of incense in ritual is representative of the elements of air and
fire. Incense is thought to purify the ritual area and "set the mood" for
magickal workings. In addition to the burners listed in this section,
small cauldrons are also exceptionally well suited as containers for
burning incense.
SAFETY NOTE: If using an incense burner that does not have feet or some
other mechanism for keeping the heated portion of the incense burner off the
ground, be sure to use a special coaster or place the incense burner on a
surface that won't burn. It is a good idea to put sand in the bottom of an
incense burner if it will be used with resin & charcoal, since the charcoal
gets VERY hot. Finally, for safety's sake, never leave burning incense
unattended.
